Understanding why Audioboo has faded:

What happened to Audioboo? It had big endorsements on board (Stephen Fry, BBC, Guardian) yet it’s been outmanoeuvred by Soundcloud and the website has looked the same for about 18 months. This quote sheds some kind of light:

For an illustration of how it can go wrong, you need only look at Audioboo, a start-up fading rapidly into obscurity partly because its competitor Soundcloud is so technologically superior, but mostly because the founders were more preoccupied with presenting the audio capture tool as a weapon in the war on the Government (predictably, the only people who use it now are… the Guardian and the BBC) than with building a world-beating business.

What are your career goals? Do some good journalism. Make good products.

What was the first concert/show you attended? First one was technically some hardcore bands at the Garage in Highbury, but I suppose the first big one was the Darkness at Brixton Academy.

Something you are working on right now. Building a cool product for journalists that I’m really passionate and excited about.

Have you ever had a near-death experience? I cracked my head open once, that was fairly grim. And this weekend I ended up uncontrollably and violently shaking for about 10 minutes after a cocktail of paracetemol, ibuprofen, penicillin and vodka. That wasn’t great.

Are you a procrastinator or do you get things done early? It depends. If I’m motivated by the subject matter, I can work all day and night on something.

TV Shows you watch regularly: Friends because I’m a student and that’s what we do. Mad Men, the Walking Dead. That about sums it up.

Twitter users may have noticed late last night the emergence of @IDidNotReport1 - a twitter account dedicated to people tweeting their experiences of not reporting rape.

It’s open to everyone to tweet something (the password is ididnotreport), and it’s produced some really heartbreaking and moving tweets since the hashtag became popular early today.

A post by student Michelle Dee, writing about Leeds Journalism Week, caught my attention. Michelle is writing about a talk by Adam Baker, the founder of Blottr.

Blottr and I have had a couple of clashes in the past.

So this is quite odd.

“With the reported 3 million users and impressive traffic figures from Adam I can see the benefits to be had as using Blottr as a tool to get your name and work out to a wider audience.

I was concerned though by the platform’s practice of allowing content to go live before moderation. I was impressed however by his answer to questions over users being able to comment on stories only by Facebook thus themselves and lessening the chance of the kind of polarized extreme responses common on comment facilities where anonymity can be used.

Two of Blottr’s contributors were highlighted as examples of what can happen, the first, Roifield Brown was writing stories from the U.S. on the Republican Nomination race, his posts were seen by established news outlets and he has now been asked to write on the same topic for the Guardian.

The second was a young journalism student Joseph Stashko who increased the site’s output noticeably and used convergent media to get his work noticed. He went on to be awarded Young Journalist of the Year and is now being headhunted by major news organisations.”

I’m not aware of having ever signed up for a Blottr account, or contributed to them knowingly. I’d also be interested to know who all these news organisations are that are headhunting me, according to Adam.
